'The limits of language are the limits of your world'

System D is a pilot project governed by RLN Southwest to show the effectiveness and entertainment value of learning a new language via a 30-minute reality television programme, available on DVD and through this interactive website.

Participants and viewers learn how to communicate in another language (French). The premise is that modern language learning in the UK needs a massive overhaul, or as recent commentators put it, a 'Jamie Oliver approach'.

The aim of this project is to take the 'foreign' out of language learning and present it as a way of enhancing general communication and cultural awareness, using all the senses with a variety of language learning techniques to make it both entertaining and educational.

System D is comprised of Six Dorset-based business people, who want to communicate internationally. From service to logistics industries, to food and retail outlets. All contestants are beginners in French, from a wide age group.

Over the course of 3 days our contestants are taught by specialists in communication and language teaching to develop language and cultural skills through activities ranging from hypnosis to wine tasting. Our contestants are then taken to Cherbourg, France and given the opportunity to communicate in French and test the knowledge they have gained over the 3-day period.
